Since the discovery of telephony, traditional phone lines have been used to transmit voice data. These lines were called the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN). A few decades after, the Digital lines were developed to increase the speed and reliability of telecommunications networks. Although the digital lines had improved functions, it was still limited to voice communications and was subject to regular call pricing.

Recent advancements in technology has created a solution for the problem of limited and expensive communications. The innovation was called Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP). The new technology, allowed voice and data transmissions to be sent through the internet instead of the traditional PSTN or Digital phone lines. It works by converting the voice vibrations into digital signals and finally to IP packets to be sent and received. VoIP technology has numerous advantages that the previous system did not have. Some of the advantages are listed below.

  • Cost Savings

This the aspect that has attracted VoIP users the most. Through the internet or private lines, all types of calls are much cheaper than the standard Public Switched Telephone Network charges. This includes long distance calls, landline to mobile calls, and even all types of international calls. The money saved can be easily allocated to other aspects of the business that requires an increase in budget.

  • Flexibility and mobility

Aside from increasing savings, internet telephony is also very flexible. Software applications can be installed such as email and remote conference rooms. It is possible to simultaneously accomplish tasks while in a conversation using the internet phone terminal. Calling from any location is also one of the best features of internet telephony, only the adapter and an internet connection is needed to establish a conversation.

  • Rich media service

The integration of rich media protocols such as FTP enable different forms of media to be sent and received. Users are no longer restricted to voice and fax messages; they can now send files, view online statuses, send instant messages, and make voice or video calls.

  • Increased productivity

The internet telephony system allows for efficient and uninterrupted multi-tasking. More tasks are available to the user such as virtual meetings and file sending. The cost savings increase can also be used to improve other aspects of the business.

  • Easy to install, use, and maintain

The VoIP system does not require advanced technical know-how to install and maintain. There is no longer a need for separate cabling to support communications. The lack of complex equipment makes the system mobile and highly scalable. It is very easy to add the components required for more users.
